Get Rid of Microsoft Office Suite-get Open Office
I wrote about Ubuntu a while ago and mentioned Open Office there too. For most of the people out there Open Office means nothing but for those who are not blinded by the corporate commercial environment of today, it is an achievement. I am neutral by the way. I support both the groups till the time they do me no harm. I am using Office 2003 and Windows XP right now (at home so have to start changing things one by one), so expect a backlash at Microsoft. Just kidding…
So, what is Open Office and why does it mean so significant to the open source guys and why do I, Owais Khan proclaim its success to be so monumental. Well there are reasons and I am going to disclose them here. For starters, Open Office gives Office XP the staunchest competition ever. Its success can be gauged from the fact that Microsoft Office XP and its proceeding editions acknowledge the .odt format. On this I know for a fact that MS Office XP reads .odt format, I do not have the proper knowledge about when was the first time it was done. So MS Office guys accept its presence and acknowledge it, why is it so great?
What makes Open Office so great it the amount of customizations, the plugins and the widgets available to use with it. We are not stuck with the standard updates of Microsoft Office but with updates of our choice and needs. People from all over the world chip in to make things go perfect and they give it their best shot as they love what they are doing. Well then, that’s Open Source development for you.
Another good thing about Open Office is that its small as compared to the MS Office XP. The installation file is only 300mb while the Microsoft version can get out of hand and easily take up more than a couple of gigabytes. This leads us to a conclusion that its small, but does it have all the functions. Well, to answer that is a bit complex. For normal use it is complete. From the word documents to the power point presentations to the excel files it’s all there. The libraries are extensive. And if you are still shortage of something you can always get an extensive plugin online.
Why, I personally prefer Open Office on my computer as compared to Microsoft Office XP is because of the system resources it uses. Open Office is extremely light if you compare it against the Microsoft version. It is fast and being a free software it gives me all the functionality that I require from an office suite. I do not appreciate paying for something I will not be using allot, and without which I can live without. This is also an extremely good option when purchasing a new personal computer or a laptop. You do not need an expensive Microsoft Office if you don not have the utility for it. Get Open Office, its free and totally worth it.

excellent information there on the Open Office! I actually tried using open office though it is kind of difficult to switch to it from Microsoft Office..I personally think Microsoft Office is easier to use though. Maybe if you can elaborate more on its applications.
